I only came across a few potholes and managed to avoid nearly all of them. My underside is probably looking like a golf ball now, though, with all the rocks I could hear pelting it. I also made a whole bunch of wrong turns, and ended up at Springer Mountain. (the southern destination of the Appalachian Trail) There were a few hikers just getting started, and I think they were kind of annoyed to see a car after thinking they’d hiked far enough to be completely in the wilderness. Then I stopped to measure a mud puddle with a stick before going through (it was too deep...) and my engine didn’t seem to shut off. Turns out that someone had managed to secretly replace my coolant with vinegar and baking soda. So I just waited until it stopped bubbling, then hoped it was all downhill from there. It pretty much was. So, yeah. Gretchen made it in one piece.

I also noticed this on the way home: a street sign being eaten by a tree.

Yep! I was surprised how many five-way unmarked intersections I came across on both sides of the trail. Seriously, they were mostly five-ways. That’s why I got lost in the first place. But it was so worth it!

Nice. Do any good camping there? I'm in the NC part of the mountains and contemplating a drive to the a good camp spot this weekend (if I can swing it).

I tried, but my dashcam kept freezing due to the heat... I’ll see if it managed to save anything from the trip, but after a point I just let it sleep in the glovebox.
